MEIJI JAPAN IN PHOTOGRAPHS

WASHI PRINTS FROM THE CLAUDE ESTÈBE COLLECTION

EXTENDED Through Nov. 30, 2018

Our new fall exhibition, in association with Serindia Gallery at the Blue Building, presents "Meiji Japan in Photographs: Washi Prints from the Claude Estèbe Collection".

In a collaboration between the Claude Estèbe Collection and Atelier Papetier, rare photographs of Japan’s Meiji period are enlarged and printed on handmade washi paper (interestingly, with Japanese mulberry grown and produced in France).

This exhibition not only brings to light some masterpieces of 19th century Japanese photographers, but also celebrates a major historical shift in Japan as this year marks 150 years of the Meiji Restoration.

Past Exhibitions: About

Celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Meiji Restoration in Japan, a watershed era of upheaval in Japanese history and culture, when the country truly entered the modern age, with the opening of our new exhibition, "Meiji Japan in Photographs: Washi Prints from the Claude Estèbe Collection."

Curated by Claude Estèbe of the Musée Guimet in Paris, from his private collection. Exquisite enlarged prints on washi paper made from Japanese mulberries grown in France.

The THNK1994 museum began as a Kickstarter project to get the $75 needed for “the enlargement of historical documents (Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan pix).”

Comedians Matt Harkins and Viviana Olen ended up with just over $2,000, and the 25-foot long hallway in their Brooklyn apartment housed Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding artifacts, original works of art, and video installations for two years.

According to the duo, visitors and artists from all over the world came to see their efforts.

In 2017 they moved to a gallery on Atlantic Avenue. Everything from their hallway now comprises their permanent collection, and past exhibitions include “The Olsen Twins Hiding From the Paparazzi,” featuring Art by Laura Collins, and the group exhibit “Nicole Richie’s 2007 Memorial Day Barbecue.”

Harkins and Olen hope guests leave with new knowledge and some good pictures for Instagram. The site’s membership page sums up their contributions to the art world quite succinctly: “The THNK1994 Museum may be small, but it also may be the most important museum ever created.”

Boro Brothers: Three friends with a great appreciation and love for glass art.

The time an artist puts into each work they create. The process of working behind the torch, the blood, sweat and tears. Countless hours spent from family, planning, prepping, practicing. Drawing inspiration. All of these contributing to the magical art they share with us.

We appreciate both functional and non functional glass art. We want to help put the art in the hands of those who will love and appreciate it. We aim to bring you the highest quality, and most sought after products our industry has to offer.

Spreading the Fine Art movement that is BORO.
